Desert centipede

Who knew that one can find desert centipedes, Scolopendra polymorpha, in Nebraska. I don't yet know the details of how it was found. There is a reasonable chance that this critter was brought in accidentally.

-- Turns out this specimen was discovered in close associate with the army fatigues of an individual who recently returned from Iraq. I'm guessing that this specimen was hitching a ride.

Stem weevils and stalk borers

Both stem weevils and stalk borers can cause damage to sunflowers. These sunflowers were damaged by stem weevils. The weakened stems were then knocked over by the wind. It is not common to find this level of damage across wide acreages. This damage was found in small research plots at the Panhandle Research and Extension Center.
